January 2nd, 2016 – First Farmers Market of the Year!

Happy New Year!

farm-hands_1We are very happy to be back and we are looking forward to a fantastic year of local food at the Central Sarasota Farmers Market hosted at the Florida House. This month marks the 2 year anniversary for out little market and we couldn’t be happier with the progress that has been made.  Please come visit us and stay tuned as we have lots of new stuff happening this year.

Here are some highlights for the market this weekend:

Produce Menu

Fruits-and-vegetables-Farmers-MarketBrown’ Grove, as always, has a vast selection of everything.  They will also have citrus from their own fields including Ruby Red Grapefruit, Navel Oranges, and Honey Belles.  Remember it is Strawberry season and Brown’s will have fresh Florida strawberries.

Geraldson Community Farm will have locally grown and organic carrots, beets, turnips, mustards, kale, collards, arugula, tatsoi, and mizuna.

Homestead Hydroponic Farm will have Butterhead, baby red romaine, gourmet lettuce mix, toscano kale, rainbow swiss chard, arugula, artisan cherry tomatoes and limited beefsteak tomatoes.

Baby Goats

goatsGlenna from Yolkers Wilde Hatchery and Dairy Goats will be bringing 2 baby goats to the market on Saturday. Bring the kids and get a picture with the most adorable baby animal on the planet: goats!

Soup & Salad

Our very own soup-n-salad woman, Sylwia, will have 4 prepared dinner items available:

  • Quinoa soup with veggies (carrot, celery, parsley root, onion, leek, herbs )
  • Mediterranean salad (arugula, roasted beets, balsamic raisins, garlic roasted walnuts, green olives, grape tomatoes, with balsamic vinaigrette
  • Savory spinach/walnut tart (fingering potatoes, spinach, walnuts, leek, fresh herbs) topped with tomato jam ( tomato, onion, garlic, capers, herbs)
  • Very berry cheesecake (cashew, almond, goji berry, strawberry, blueberries, raspberries, dates, coconut nectar)

From the Bakery

In addition to Chef John’s delicious artisan breads, including several high protein, sprouted breads, Cheesecake Me Desserts will have homemade chocolate truffle cheesecake and key lime pie.

Special Guest

KurtosCakesFor the month of January, we are excited to have Aniko Gulyas from Kurtos, Inc.  Aniko makes a delicious and unique Hungarian pastry known as a Kurtos Cake.  The pastry dough is wrapped around a wooden cylinder for cooking, making the pastry into the shape of a spiral.  With savory and sweet flavors, Kurtos Cakes are great for a snack or an addition to any meal.  Stop by Anikos booth.  I’m sure she’ll be offering samples for you to try!
